How to Take More Meaningful Photos

Have you ever returned from a trip, looked at your photos, and wondered, "Why did I take this?"


That’s a great question.

Maybe the image lacks emotion or a sense of purpose. You captured the scene, but you don’t feel anything when you look at it. You don’t remember why you took that photo.


The Difference Between a Meaningful and an Empty Image

Photography is a form of communication—it’s about conveying a message to the viewer. That viewer could be someone else or even your future self.

When you see a photo, and it brings back the emotions of that moment, or when someone else views an image, and it evokes feelings, that photograph has succeeded in its purpose.

So, before focusing on your subject, focus on your intention first. A powerful image starts in the photographer’s mind before it reaches the camera.


Your Camera Is an Extension of Your Eyes (and Your Soul)

There is a saying: 「眼は心の窓」 (Mé wa Kokoro no Mado – The eyes are the window to the soul.)

Your camera is an extension of your eyes—and, by extension, your soul. What you see and feel in a moment shapes what you capture. If you press the shutter without awareness, the message you want to communicate may become blurred. But when you connect deeply with your emotions before clicking the shutter, it will show through your photography. This is the essence of my approach to photography.


How to Practice Mindful Photography

So, how do you take photos that resonate? It’s simple but powerful:

  1. Pause and breathe. Before raising your camera, take a deep breath. Give yourself a moment to be present.

  2. Feel and recognize your emotions. What are you experiencing? Is it joy, nostalgia, or serenity? Acknowledge what’s rising within you.

  3. Look with your heart. Observe the scene not just with your eyes, but with your emotions. Does this moment truly speak to you?

  4. Then, press the shutter. If it feels right—if it means something—capture it. Let the image reflect what you felt.


The Journey to Meaningful Photography

Over my 20 years as a professional photographer, I have always hoped my images would resonate with my clients and their families for generations. And honestly, there were sessions where I wished circumstances had allowed me to be more mindful. But those moments challenged me to find ways to improve my approach to photography.
